Healthy Active Lifestyle in Campus - Physical Activity Tips for Students

Being physically active can be difficult when you have a busy schedule.  However, here are some useful tips to help you keep active on campus.

 

  1. Walk to class

Whilst taking public transportation might be quicker, walking will give you a chance to stretch your legs, burn some calories and relax before your next class.

  1. Take advantage of open spaces

If your campus is equipped with large open spaces such as grassy quads or parks, it would be beneficial to take advantage of ths by going for walks or hikes.

  1. Choose to exercise

A well balanced workout should be structured in three parts: warm-up, main training and cool down.  It is very important to follow the three parts of the workout in order to prevent injury and maximize the benefits.

  1. Wear proper sport clothing while exercising

The best clothes to wear when training are: sport pants, t-shirt and sport shoes. With a little preparation, you can put together the perfect training outfit.

Generally, the more comfortable you feel in your clothes the more likely you will be to continue with your exercise routine.

  1. Get involved in your campus recreation center

There are a range of recreation clubs and sports teams on campus for you to choose from.

Remember: if you participate in activities that you enjoy you're more likely to stick to it long term.

  1. Workout with partner

Training with a friend or family member can be beneficial as you can encourage and motivate each other to continue with the program.

  1. Wear sport shoes while exercising

Whether your workout involves running, walking, specific sports or gym: a decent sport shoe is a must.

Injury caused by inappropriate shoes can needlessly derail your fitness or weight loss attempt. Therefore, investing in a quality shoe can help you to prevent foot and ankle damage, and make your workout a more pleasant and comfortable experience.

  1. Choose appropriate intensity of your workout

The intensity of your workout should vary dependent on whether you are beginner, intermediate or advanced.

If you are a beginner, take it slowly and build up your intensity over time in order to get all the benefits of exercise and prevent injury. Remember to listen to your body.

However, if you are unsure about which intensity suits your needs ask an experienced coach to assist you.

  1. Drink water while training

It is important to drink more water during and after physical activity, particularly in hot climates like that of Doha.

One of the first symptoms of dehydration is fatigue, which causes a significant drop in sporting performance. It may also cause you to experience cramps, heat stress and heat stroke.

  1. Reasons for choosing physical activity as a lifestyle

There are many benefits to maintaining an active lifestyle: weight management, better sleep, improved mood, endurance, strength, cardiovascular fitness and the prevention chronic diseases.
